New Trading Post
The New Trading Post board continues to be committed to creating a thriving and enjoyable shopping experience. In addition, we strive to identify local organizations and individuals who can benefit from our unsold merchandise.
Throughout the year, we see our mission being realized in the store through interactions with our customers and consignors as well as through donations to the community. Experiencing the NTP mission being carried out beyond the storefront demonstrates the importance of our work and makes our continued efforts so rewarding. If you would like to be a part of this great work, please talk with one of our board members. We welcome your involvement in 2020.
This year has seen a continued growth in consignors as well as an increase in the quality of the clothing that is being consigned and donated. This has resulted in higher sales and a continued increase in the amount of individual sales. Our fabulous window displays coordinated by Kim Cavanaugh greatly enhance our image in our community and entice new and old customers with the best of what we have to offer.
Our beneficiaries of outdated merchandise include the following groups: Do Something Boston, an organization serving the homeless in the Mass Ave/MGH neighborhood and Clothes to Go, a volunteer group that provides free clothing to those in need. Associated with Faith Fellowship United Methodist Church in North Attleboro, Clothes to Go offers a Saturday morning free boutique as well as regularly donating clothes to area social agencies. We are so pleased to have joined up with organizations that directly serve communities in need. We have also served several individuals and families who experienced unforeseen hardships during the year. In addition, we donate our unsold housewares to Big Brother/Big Sister Foundation and Vietnam Veterans of America. We are very focused on good environmental practices and making sure that our discards do not end up in landfills.
With our profits from 2018, the NTP was able to make monetary donations to the St. Mark’s Life Building Fund to support those in need in our community. In addition, a donation was made to Project Do Something (PDS) to purchase much needed socks and underwear (social service agencies do not provide these items) for the homeless community living on Boston’s Mass Avenue. PDS distributes more than 100 care packages each week to this population.
Beyond donating time volunteering in the store, the NTP Board of Directors performs all the tasks of managing a retail business with no paid staff. From volunteer scheduling and communication, customer service duties, marketing and merchandising planning and implementation and financial and bookkeeping responsibilities, to making sure that the NTP continues to benefit our community, the board has worked tirelessly to represent a positive and active mission of St. Mark’s in our community.
